If I recall correctly, very first game had an entirely different reasoning behind it as well, did it not? Cranberry brought the participants together simply to fight and kill them. When she was killed, several other iterations of the game came into existence as well as a new iteration of Fav himself. This is where I assume the game was restructured to what we know it as now.
